Occupational Road Safety - a quick guide

 

Occupational Road Safety is managing the risk associated with employees driving for work - both professional and ad-hoc drivers. In the UK the Health and Safety Executive estimate that 25% of all road traffic accidents are people driving for work, this equates to around 500 road traffic deaths a year and 45,000 injuries.

Driving is the single MOST dangerous activity that any employee undertakes on behalf of their employer

 

In most countries occupational road safety is becoming more important to both Government and employers, this is especially noticeable in emerging countries as investors want to make sure that any investment they make, is spent in a way that protects employees and communities.

Occupational Road Safety provides an opportunity for employers to manage the road safety risks that they create during thier normal work OR is created by external factors that they need to manage to keep thier employees and the wider communities around them safe from harm.

In most of Europe, North America and parts of the AsiaPac region laws have been introduced to support occupational road safety and whatever system you as an employer puts in place, those laws must be accounted for.

I would recommend that your organisation has an occupational road risk system with some basics that include:

An outline of your legal obligations for your country of operation or if its a global policy a statement that clearly identifies that the legal requirements of the country supersede any internal policy - you may of course have a stronger policy than the law requires but you can never have a lower standard.
